How to Stay Hydrated in the Summer

Summer activities are endless, but in the recent extreme heat the risk of dehydration has increased. The body loses water naturally through sweating, breathing and going to the bathroom. Dehydration is the excessive loss of water from the body, and can become a major issue. People may not recognize the symptoms until they are already dehydrated. It is extremely important to balance this loss especially during these hot, summer months.

Staying hydrated in the summer is easier than one may think, and the most common issue is remembering to keep up with hydration. The rule of thumb is to drink on average eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, which is about 1.9 liters. The industry standard in regards to water consumption is about 3 liters for men and for women that number is closer to 2.2 liters.

There are many foods that have high water content, such as lettuce, watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and a variety of others. This is why these foods can be satisfying to consume in the summer, and at the same time promote hydration. Consuming beverages besides water is safe too as long as they have a high water content, such as lemonade and real fruit juices.

It is especially important drink enough water when outside on these warm, summer months because our bodies tend to lose more water than average on hot days. It is common practice to have a drink of water every 15 minutes when activity levels are high because of excessive sweat and water loss. Over the summer be sure to stay hydrated while maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. If severe dehydration occurs see a doctor or visit urgent care as soon as possible.
